ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – An Academy Sports + Outdoors is planned for the southwest corner of the Albany Mall parking lot.
According to Albany City Councilman Chad Warbington, the proposed store, with a sales price of $11 million and a space of 5,100 square feet, will be one of Academy Sports + Outdoors’ larger stores.
“Albany has all the infrastructure to support all of this,” Warbington said. “It will be a regional shopping center. It will have everything they have to offer.”
Two Hilton hotels are planned on a now-vacant lot next to the mall where Sears once stood. The hotels will reportedly have a total of 160 rooms.
Albany Commissioner Jon Howard says city leaders hope the hotels, along with Academy Sports + Outdoors, will help save the Albany Mall.
“It would be ideal. We hope it will breathe new life into the Albany Mall and take it off life support. It could bring new businesses to the mall,” Howard said.
The Albany City Commission is expected to approve the zoning at its next commission meeting on Tuesday, August 27.
