A woman discovered a buried carpet in her backyard – and the internet says it’s a body

What started when a woman believed her house was haunted has now sparked a police investigation.

Katie Santry of Columbus, Ohio, was using TikTok earlier this week when she noticed her home office, including her laptop screen, was destroyed. Later, while trying to put up a fence in her backyard, she and her boyfriend, Brandon, found a rolled-up carpet buried in the ground. Now her videos have received millions of views on TikTok as both Santry and the internet try to decipher her mysterious findings.

“Is there a body in this carpet?” Or is it the ghost from the carpet’s past?” she asked in one of her videos, adding: “My neighbor also died in her house the day we bought this house last October.”

“The house was boarded up the same day this happened. So it was just a series of strange, random events that a creative mind could interpret as spooky.”

Santry had enlisted help digging up the carpet in her backyard, but she later realized it was too long and received comments from TikTokers encouraging her to call law enforcement.

When Columbus police arrived at her home, they surveyed the area and determined it was worth calling a backhoe to dig up the carpet. However, after notifying the police chief, it was determined that officers could not deploy resources. It would be up to Santry to dig up the carpet himself and call them back if anything was found.

The TikToker explained that she would initially leave the rug in the ground given its proximity to her fire pit. But after more pressure from the comment section, she decided to dig further and even went so far as to call the real estate agent who sold the house. Santry said she hopes to contact the home’s old owners in hopes they know where the rug came from.

However, before she was scheduled to host a TikTok livestream in which she and her friends dug up the carpet, she received a call from homicide. They told her they wanted to send detectives and cadaver dogs to her home and inspect the area.

When the dogs began sniffing around her backyard, they immediately sat on the carpeted area, a sign of possible human remains. However, Santry noted in one of her TikTok videos that it could also mean something like blood from a bloody nose or a scraped knee.

The latest update from Santry’s TikTok series came on Thursday, October 3, when she announced that her home was cordoned off by law enforcement. She explained to her followers that she was waiting for a forensic team to show up at her house to see what was on the carpet. Police also told her it wasn’t worth hiring a lawyer because there was “no concern” she was involved.

However, commenters told her it might still be worth getting a lawyer.

“A word of advice: the police are on your side until they aren’t. Lawyer as soon as possible. You think the blame for this can’t be yours, but they could be building a case, and that very well could be the case. Take care!” one commenter suggested.

Another user agreed, writing, “I don’t think it’s a bad idea to hire a lawyer, if only to protect your rights as a homeowner and ensure your property is protected during an investigation!”

In a statement about this The independent, Santry explained that looking back on the event series, she never expected her videos to get this far. “I 1,000 percent did not expect something like this to happen when I posted a video about my house being haunted and a ‘ghost’ breaking my MacBook,” she said.

Columbus police also said in an emailed statement that while the investigation is ongoing, there are inconclusive results at this time. “CPD held the scene overnight and officers resumed the investigation this morning. At the time of this email, there are inconclusive results,” they said.
