After starting 11-4 last year, the Dolphins finished 1-7. Without Tua Tagovailoa, they struggled at quarterback. (To be fair, the offense wasn’t exactly zooming around like a Ferrari before Tua’s concussion.)

Since the Chiefs suddenly need a new number 1 receiver, and receiver Tyreek Hill visibly upset While on the sideline during the ugly loss to the Titans late Monday night, the idea is spreading that the Dolphins could/should just trade Hill back to the Chiefs.

Although Hill’s postgame comments, if he spoke to reporters at all, have not surfaced yet, coach Mike McDaniel was asked about Hill’s frustrations in garbage time.

“I would expect him to be visibly upset with someone,” McDaniel told reporters. “A lot of times guys shout at us – he’s a leader and he wanted to do everything he could to make sure the outcome wasn’t like that. There are a lot of guys in the locker room challenging each other and we definitely get a chance to see what we’re made of.”

Hill may have already made a judgment call about what the 2024 Dolphins are “made of.” And he could see a way to get another ring while helping the Chiefs to their third straight win by returning to Kansas City.

That’s aside from the trade compensation required to undo a deal in which the Dolphins gave the Chiefs a first-round pick, a second-round pick, two fourth-round picks and a sixth-round pick to get him in 2022 , it would be Miami If they trade Hill now, they’ll take a big cap hit through 2025: $41.8 million.

They will also have paid him an additional $24 million in August for the number of games he played before a trade. (The deadline is the Tuesday after week 9.)

While it’s not impossible, the Chiefs would have to give up a lot to justify the financial impact on the Dolphins. And they are already dealing with significant potential financial consequences arising from Tua’s still-new contract, which does not include any insurance for the team against future concussions.

The Chiefs traded away Hill for a reason. They may not be inclined to offer the Dolphins a package that would force them to part ways with the man who is still their best player.

So while it’s fun to connect the dots, it won’t be fun for the Dolphins to gobble up all that money and cap space. And it won’t be fun for the Chiefs to give up what they would have to give up to bring him back.
