Tessa Virtue and Morgan Rielly are officially welcoming a new addition to their family.
On Tuesday, Virtue posted a carousel of vacation photos on Instagram that revealed she is pregnant with her first child. The Canadian ice dancer shared snaps of her husband, the Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman, on the beach, as well as images showing her growing baby bump.
“A few snaps from my favorites folder from a few weeks ago,” wrote the 35-year-old Olympic gold medalist. The London, Ontario-born athlete’s post included photos of a picturesque sunny beach, the couple lounging by the pool overlooking the ocean, and Rielly, 30, giving Virtue a kiss on the cheek.
The post sparked a flurry of comments celebrating the news and congratulating the duo on their upcoming chapter.
“Ahhh congratulations. This was so much fun to swipe through,” wrote Canadian influencer Sarah Nicole Landry.
“Oh my gosh Tessa! What an incredible surprise swipe-through! Congratulations to you both!” added Canadian model Ashley Callingbull.
“The best news of 2024, especially as a fan since I was a kid,” one fan chimed in.
The couple’s update came as a surprise to many of their fans, as they have often kept their relationship out of the spotlight. Although their romance has been remarkably private, Virtue and Rielly have shared little tidbits of their partnership with the world since they began dating. Before 2020: Virtue and Rielly met through friends
In a 2023 interview with Shantelle Bisson on the podcast “Without Losing Your Cool,” Virtue said she and Rielly have been together for several years and the couple were introduced to each other through “mutual friends.”
January 2020: Virtue and Rielly make their first public appearance
Photos of Virtue and Rielly together at the MLSE charity event surfaced on social media. Although neither athlete announced their relationship, fans viewed this photo as confirmation.
February 2020: Auston Matthews reveals Rielly’s relationship status
Although he did not mention Virtue by name, Rielly’s teammate Auston Matthews revealed Bar stools podcast “Spittin’ Chicklets” that he and Rielly hadn’t been together as often because he was too busy spending time with his new girlfriend.
“I was pretty mad at him for a while and yelling at him and stuff like that because he kind of kept it to himself, he didn’t say it outright,” Matthews said of Rielly’s relationship before calling Virtue an “absolute sweetheart.”
March 2020: Virtue and Rielly appear together on an Instagram livestream
Virtue and Rielly eventually confirmed their relationship in a livestream with Arkells singer Max Kerman. At the time, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the two were in quarantine together.
April 2020, being there for each other in quarantine
In April 2020, Rielly spoke to reporters during his hockey break about how he was coping with the pandemic and quarantine.
“We’re both kind of in this together,” Rielly said of the time she spends with Virtue. “We try to keep each other sane. I don’t want to say too much about it, but … I’m glad I’m not alone in a time like this. We all need someone to talk to.
July 2022: The couple continues to keep a low profile
Following the excitement of confirming the dating rumors, the new couple maintained an extremely private relationship with very few sightings together in public or on social media. On July 1, 2022, Virtue shared a collage of Canada Day photos on Instagram that included a small, mysterious glimpse of her then-boyfriend with her arm wrapped around him.
December 2022: Virtue indicates engagement
On New Year’s Eve 2022, the ice dancer shared a message along with a black-and-white photo of herself and Rielly walking arm in arm down a street.
“Goodbye 2022… you were special,” she wrote.
January 2023: The couple confirms their engagement
Virtue confirmed her and Rielly’s engagement during an appearance on Bisson’s podcast. She detailed how her relationship with the athlete changed her perspective on relationships.
“For a long time I was very reserved and I didn’t give out my phone number, I didn’t open up – I was very closed off,” she said. “But I think that’s changed. I feel much more open now and maybe that’s just because I’m comfortable with who I am and what I want and it helps to be a good judge of character too.”
In a separate interview with Sports Illustrated, Rielly added that he feels “very lucky” to be engaged to Virtue.
June 2023: Rielly hints at her wedding plans
Talk to Daffodil, The Maple Leafs defenceman openly admitted that the couple were in the midst of wedding planning. Rielly said he and Virtue were “extremely happy” and “definitely have a plan.”
“I don’t know how much I want to give away, but we’re extremely happy, we’re really excited about it. We’re in a great place,” he said. “This is a great time in our lives, so we’re just having fun with it.”
October 2023: Rielly spotted with wedding ring
In October last year, Rielly posted a series of photos on Instagram giving his fans a glimpse of his wedding ring. The photos sparked a storm of speculation that the couple had secretly married.
February 2024: Virtue and Rielly share photos from wedding ceremonies
At the beginning of February, Virtue confirmed Hello! Canada that she and Rielly have tied the knot. Photos shared by the magazine show the couple celebrating their nuptials with an intimate dinner at Toronto restaurant Noce before heading to Italy for a romantic reception in Tuscany.
“We were on cloud nine,” Virtue said, noting that their wedding was “magical.”
She added that she was sometimes torn about keeping her engagement and wedding plans a secret: “You know when something means so much to you that you want to simultaneously hold on to it and protect it and still want to shout it out to the world?”
Virtue said planning with Rielly was not stressful, noting that the experience created a bond between them and motivated them to be “the very best partners for each other.”
May 2024: Virtue announces she is pregnant
In an Instagram post on May 28, Virtue shared a series of photos from a beach vacation she spent with Rielly – including snaps of her growing baby bump. The surprise pregnancy announcement, which she slyly captioned “a few snaps from my favorites folder from a few weeks ago,” shocked many fans.
“Oh my god! We missed a chapter! Congratulations,” someone commented on the post along with a red heart emoji.
“Tessa!! Zoë will be the best partner in crime,” added another, referring to the couple’s beloved dog.
