During a time of uncertainty in Jelly Roll’s relationship with his wife Bunnie Xo, it was a love ballad by Dan and Shay that helped bring the two back together.

On her TikTok, Bunnie recently shared a throwback video of a special 2022 concert Jelly played with Dan + Shay. During a performance of their song “Tequila,” the “Save Me” star left the stage to find his wife — and they slow danced to the entire song.

Dan + Shay are known for their love songs, and hits like “Speechless” and “From the Ground Up” are popular wedding songs for country fans. But “Tequila” has a touch of sadness: it’s about not being able to let go of a relationship after it’s over.

This dark undercurrent made “Tequila” the perfect song to describe Jelly and Bunnie’s love story in 2018, when they separated and almost broke up for good.

In her new post, Bunnie explains how much “Tequila” has meant to the couple during this time.

“We broke up in 2018… and met up in Colorado to talk and see if it would work,” she says. “That song was our song for the entire reunion journey. At the end of it, we came back together and stronger than ever.”

In the past, Jelly and Bunnie have spoken openly about their split and how the ensuing “rebuilding” ultimately strengthened their relationship. The couple married in 2016, but she said on TikTok that they weren’t fully committed to each other at the time.

Both partners had drug problems when they got together. At the time, Jelly was still an unsuccessful artist and Bunnie was working as a sex worker and catering to high-profile clients.

In the years that followed, he developed into one of the biggest contemporary country music acts, often donating to programs that target at-risk and incarcerated youth, as well as those with addiction issues. Meanwhile, Bunnie built her career as a social media influencer and host of her Stupid blonde Podcasts.

Although their relationship has been rocky at times, they’ve always found their way back to each other – in this case with the help of “Tequila” by Dan + Shay.

“This song still makes us incredibly emotional and happy to this day,” writes Bunnie. “What an extremely surreal moment that brought us full circle as a couple… Thank you, Dan and Shay, for your song and for giving us this moment and the memories associated with your song.”

Bunnie and Jelly renewed their wedding vows in 2023 at the same Las Vegas church where they were originally married.
