A new Netflix action film with extremely controversial reviews tops the streamer’s film charts
Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg’s new action comedy “The Union” was not so popular with critics, but Netflix subscribers seem to be excited…
According to FlixPatrol, the film has already topped the streamer’s global top 10, which isn’t too bad considering it’s only been out for three days. The film, which debuted on the platform on August 16, stars Wahlberg as down-to-earth construction worker Mike McKenna, whose normal life is turned upside down when his high school sweetheart Roxanne Hall re-enters his life.
The catch? Roxanne is now a secret agent working for a mysterious organization called The Union. And she needs Mike’s help – and his inconspicuous identity – to carry out a high-risk mission.
Jessica McGouw (Arrow), Mike Colter (Evil), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) and JK Simmons complete the supporting cast.
“A bit of globetrotting and the odd suspenseful scene make for a welcome spectacle,” we said in our review of The Union, while critic Matt Looker praised the performances and chemistry of the leads. “It all threatens to be ruined by a sluggish middle section and a (very) predictable reveal, but the film just about achieves its goal.”
Others were less generous. Roger Moore of Movie Nation called the film “generic” and “predictable to a ridiculous degree” and Rex Reed of the Observer said, “This contrived, pointless, unbelievably boring vehicle is a pathetic, desperate attempt to keep the careers of Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg alive.” The film currently has a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
