Some people like to get to know their neighbors, others prefer to stay among themselves.

There is nothing wrong with either approach, as it is all a matter of personal preference.

What would you do if you were alone and a group of people asked you to help a neighbor buy a new television?

In the following story, a man finds himself in exactly this situation.

Let’s see what happened.

I (M26) live in a large apartment complex with several buildings.

I’ve lived here for years now and there has never been even the slightest hint of community living, and that’s fine with me.

Maybe it’s because I moved in during the pandemic, but I don’t even know the names of my neighbors or which apartments people are currently living in.

This brings us to Monday evening when I got home from work.

That seems like a nice gesture.

There were flyers on every door.

Apparently the guy three doors down had an incident where his dog jumped up and knocked his TV off the wall, completely breaking it.

Some of his friends live in the complex and they have started a collection to help him afford a new home in these “tough financial times we are all in as a country.”

The collection includes a few paragraphs describing what a great guy he is, how he volunteers for a local charity, how much he loves his nieces, etc.

The friends go one step further.

Today, as I was preparing dinner, there was a knock on my door.

Four of his friends set up a donation box and wanted to know how much I contributed.

At first I was just confused. I had forgotten the flyer and had had many long days at work.

They seemed insulted that I had to ask about the purpose of the posts and explained the whole television situation to me again.

So I told them I didn’t know him and that these “tough financial times we’re all facing as a country” were a big reason I couldn’t afford to finance someone else’s purchase of a new TV.

This does not seem to me to be an emergency, nor a reason that requires people to go door to door asking for money.

This is where things take a turn for the worse.

One woman called me an asshole and another told me, “It’s people like you (me) who prevent any neighborly ties from occurring here.”

Is this possible?

Wow! That’s not very polite!

Let’s see how Reddit readers reacted to this situation.

These are some great thoughts.

These neighbors have nerves!

The man should buy his own television and teach his dog manners.
