A horror film by Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón is coming

Alfonso Cuaronthe Oscar-winning director of films such as Children of men And Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabanwas at the Locarno Film Festival to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award, headline their signature Film Masterclass and kick off a re-screening of the 1976 film, Jonah, who will be 25 years old in the year 2000. While there, he talked about his career and surprised many when he explained that he had been thinking about horror film for years. “My goal is to make a horror film one day,” Cuarón said (via Deadline), adding:



I love
Rosemary’s Baby
and the other Polanski films and films like
The Babadook
. They’re so grounded in reality and in the characters, that’s why I love them. As a viewer, I have broader tastes, but anything I could do would have to be more grounded. I’ve tried to write something like that, but somehow it doesn’t quite work.

When the director of films like Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabanthe darkest film of the whole Harry Potter series, wants to make a horror movie and is willing to wait until he writes something proper (that isn’t a remake, of course), then all we can say is that we will proudly wait.

Cuarón is the Mexican director whose unique filmography can capture anyone’s attention. His films are visual masterpieces that usually involve an agonizing production process, so it’s no wonder that since his debut with the hilarious Only with your partner in 1991. Hopefully his ninth will be the scary one he always wanted to make. The director is undoubtedly a master of suspense and brilliant at making the most of special effects. Unless you count his obscure participation in the Mexican anthology television series The Hour MarkedCuarón has never made a horror film before, but judging by his words and our interest, it’s time for him to give it a try.

Cuarón’s latest directorial effort is actually a miniseries for Apple TV+, Disclaimeradapted from a novel by Renée Knight. The film will be screened at the Venice Film Festival and then premiered in October 2024. Apart from Cuarón’s usual team of collaborators such as Emmanuel Lubezki (who Amélie(Bruno Delbonnel for camera) the series has a very exciting cast: Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Lesley Manville, Louis Partridge and more. The psychological thriller tells the story of a shady journalist who receives a novel by an unknown author. As she reads it, she realizes that she is the main character, and somehow the book tells some things that no one should ever know about her.
