A blast from the past, Karim Adeyemi and more: Three things we learned from Borussia Dortmund's win over Heidenheim

Nuri Şahin Borussia Dortmund overcome Heidenheim with a convincing 4-2 victory at the start of the third matchdayand thereby sent a signal to the top of the Bundesliga.

After taking an early 2-0 lead, Dortmund threatened to undo their hard work when Marvin Pieringer reduced the deficit, but a quick reaction from Karim Adeyemi saw BvB restore their two-goal lead before half-time.

In the second half, the guests found their way back into the game with a goal from twelve meters, but they failed to score the important equalizer and so BvB converted a penalty in injury time and finally overtook their opponents at the top of the table.

A retro performance by Borussia Dortmund

Last season, BvB failed to impress on German soil and, despite an impressive run to the Champions League final, often fell short of expectations in the Bundesliga.

A lack of attacking power had caused frustration among many BvB fans when it came to playing football under Edin Terzić. However, in the first few games with Nuri Şahin at the helm, the same problems seemed to plague Dortmund.

Nevertheless, the Black and Yellows appeared as offensive against Heidenheim as they did in the 2010s and had obviously used the international break effectively.

With a beautiful, complex game in and around the Heidenheim penalty area, the players in the black and yellow jerseys made space for themselves and received the ball in a compact Heidenheim defense unit.

Although they seemed to falter after their second goal, Dortmund managed to fight back and keep control of the game. If Sahin’s team can continue this for the rest of the season, they will surely challenge for the championship trophy.

The red-hot Karim Adeyemi

Since his move to BvB, Adeyemi has undoubtedly had his critics – especially because he has not been able to consistently impress in the Dortmund jersey.

But an impressive international break with the German U21 team has clearly inspired the 22-year-old and he has been instrumental in all of the hosts’ impressive performances.

After a clever assist for the opening goal by Donyell Malen, Adeyemi scored the next two goals for Dortmund.

Still, it was the winger’s decision-making that was most impressive.

In the decisive moments, every decision Adeyemi made was clear, correct and perfectly implemented – a factor that could be decisive for Dortmund this season if the 22-year-old’s confidence remains so high.

Heidenheim meets its opponent

He went into this game as the leader of the Bundesligasome expects Heidenheim to put Dortmund under pressure and possibly take a point from the Westfalenstadion.

Although the visitors showed their quality later in the game, it was in the early stages that they slacked off, failed to gain control of the game and allowed themselves to be overwhelmed by the situation.

This is not an indictment of Heidenheim, however. The Blues should not be expected to come to Dortmund and beat the hosts.

It is obvious that Frank Schmidt’s team is an impressive team, but not yet at the level to beat BvB. But the fear of relegation should not plague the club.
