A bill to restructure the Secret Service following the attack on Trump in Pennsylvania will be presented to the House of Representatives

Representative Ritchie Torres (DN.Y.) has introduced a bill that would restructure the functions of the US secret service in the wake of the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

The law entitled “Focus on protection law“, proposes that the agency focus exclusively on protecting political leaders and eliminate its current jurisdiction to investigate financial crimes.

Restructuring and security enhancement

The legislative proposal provides that all resources and personnel required for the the investigation of financial crime transferred to the Ministry of Finance within 180 days. This change is intended to improve efficiency in combating such crimes and allow the Secret Service to focus on its core mission: protecting high-ranking politicians, their families, and foreign dignitaries.

In addition, the law proposes Strengthening security at public events by extending the Secret Service’s perimeter of protection to at least 1,500 feet, with additional adjustments depending on the specific needs of the environment. In addition, securing any elevated positions that could be used for attack, a measure not currently required by law.

These enhanced security measures are intended to prevent incidents such as the shooting at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.in which one attendee died and three people were injured, including the former president. The incident exposed significant security deficiencies by the Secret Service, as an attacker with an AR-15 rifle was able to position himself at an elevated location about 150 meters from Trump.

Cross-party support and historical context

Although the idea of restructuring the Secret Service has been discussed for years, it has gained renewed bipartisan support following the assassination of former President Trump. Torres’ proposal reflects a growing concern about the Secret Service’s ability to adapt to current threats and effective protection of America’s political leaders.
