Preston Stone is ready for the BYU challenge and praises the team’s progress

SMU Mustangs quarterback Preston Stone spoke to the media today and shared his insights on the upcoming game against BYU, the Mustangs’ impressive performance against Houston Christian and the move to the ACC.

Stone was aware of the challenge posed by BYU and highlighted their disciplined defense.

“They’re a really good team… The defense plays very disciplined, they don’t give themselves the win,” he noted, recalling a close game against BYU two years ago.

He stressed that the SMU must act consistently in critical situations.

“I think it’s going to come down to us being consistent, over-disciplining them and doing our jobs.”

Stone praised the team’s balanced offensive performance against Houston Christian.

“We ran almost 365 meters … that was done by three guys, it was really impressive,” he said.

He also highlighted the participation of ten different recipients and emphasized the depth and selfless culture of the team.

“That says a lot about the guys we have … that we can distribute the ball and not let egos get in the way,” Stone noted.

Stone also praised the outstanding performance of the defense, which allowed only seven points and only 34 yards of rushing time.

“Our defense has kept us in the game every year,” he said, drawing parallels to last season. He expects their dominance to continue in upcoming games.

Speaking about the team’s progress, Stone said, “I think we’ve definitely taken a big step.” He recognized areas where there is still room for improvement, explaining, “There’s still a lot of room for improvement for me and for us as a team.”

When asked about the key to getting off to a quick start on offense, Stone emphasized execution and avoiding penalties.

“We definitely have to stay ahead of the chains … and make sure we stick to our game plan,” he explained.

Looking ahead to the Power 4 Conference’s challenging 10-game schedule, Stone said the team is focused on the task at hand.

“Once you’re in the moment and the ball gets snapped, you’re just a different team no matter who you’re playing against,” he explained.
