4 dead, 9 injured, suspect in custody

At least four people are dead and nine are in the hospital after a shooting at a high school in the US state of Georgia, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed.

In an updated post on X (formerly Twitter), the GBI, which is assisting in the investigation, also said a suspect was in custody and alive, adding that reports that the suspect had been “neutralized” were inaccurate.

Authorities did not say how many of the victims were children.

CNN reported, citing law enforcement sources, that the suspect was a 14-year-old boy, but added that it was not clear whether the suspect was a student at the school.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting was reported at 10:23 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, according to 11 Alive, Atlanta News First and ABC News.

After the shooting, the school was reportedly placed on lockdown.

Atlanta News First reported that dozens of ambulances and a rescue helicopter were seen outside the school.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) Governor Brian Kemp said He has made all available state funds available to the school.

In a White House statement Wednesday afternoon, President Joe Biden said he “mourns the deaths” of those killed in the shooting and is thinking “of all the survivors whose lives have been forever changed.”

“What should have been a joyous back-to-school season in Winder, Georgia, has now become another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart. Students across the country are learning to duck and take cover instead of learning to read and write,” the president said. “We cannot continue to accept this as normal.”

Biden added: “We are working closely with federal, state and local authorities and are grateful to the first responders who took the suspect into custody and prevented further loss of life.”

Winder is located about 50 miles outside of Atlanta.
