Suspect in custody, reports of “victims” at Georgia high school

At least two people were killed and four injured when shots were fired at a high school in suburban Atlanta. Wednesday, according to preliminary information from law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation.

A suspect was taken into custody, the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement, adding that casualties had been reported.

Officers and paramedics rushed to Apalachee High School around 10:23 a.m. “because a shooting was reported there,” the statement said.

The school is located about 45 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.

A “soft lockdown” was imposed on all Barrow County Schools campuses in Winder, Georgia, with most activity centered around Apalachee High School, where police cars, fire trucks and ambulances were gathered.

Students could be seen being escorted to the school’s football stadium.

“I have deployed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state,” Governor Brian Kemp said in a statement.

Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta confirmed it was treating a gunshot victim.
