Anna Sorokin is no longer under house arrest, but goes to “Dancing With the Stars”

Anna Sorokin will dance. ICE will watch.

On Wednesday, ABC announced that Sorokin – who was convicted in 2019 of defrauding banks, hotels and individuals of their money as a European heiress named Anna Delvey – will join the cast of the 33rd season of “Dancing With the Stars,” ankle bracelet and all.

This season’s 13 contestants, including current “Bachelorette” lead Jenn Tran, trans ex Joey Graziadei, “Real Housewives” star Phaedra Parks and several Olympic athletes, were announced on “Good Morning America.”

ABC’s press release, which refers to Sorokin as Anna Delvey, downplays her criminal conviction, instead describing her as “an artist, fashion icon and notorious New York socialite who gained international attention after Netflix acquired the rights to her story and developed it into the 2022 miniseries ‘Inventing Anna.'”

“Some consider her a cunning con artist, while others see her as a charismatic and ambitious entrepreneur who exploited New York’s social elite to open a prestigious art studio,” it says. “Her case has also sparked discussions about wealth, privilege and social advancement in modern society.”

Sorokin completed her prison sentence (which she had previously described as a “huge waste of time”) for her crimes in February 2021. However, as a German citizen, she faces deportation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Sorokin has been fighting a lengthy and complicated legal battle to stay in the United States and appeal her conviction. Shortly after her release from prison, an immigration judge in New York placed her under house arrest and banned her from using social media.

In early August, Sorokin quietly won a major legal victory. After a successful appeal and a separate federal court lawsuit brought by her immigration attorney, John Sandweg, who served as acting head of ICE during Barack Obama’s presidency, an immigration judge lifted many of the restrictions Sorokin had ordered.

“There are some reasonable restrictions,” Sandweg said in an interview with Business Insider on Wednesday. “She still wears an ankle bracelet. There are certain things she has to get approval from ICE for. But of course, these are far less than her requirements.”

Sorokin has returned to social media, still wearing an ankle bracelet – which she shows off as a fashion accessory in her promotional photo for “Dancing With the Stars” – as she continues to fight in court to stay in the U.S. and overturn her conviction.

Her newfound freedom has allowed her to pursue a number of projects, including her appearance on “Dancing With the Stars” and several New York Fashion Week events this month in collaboration with Pornhub and fashion PR agent Kelly Cutrone.

“She can now basically live her life, subject to regular court dates and the like,” Sandweg told BI.

Season 33 of Dancing With the Stars premieres September 17 on ABC and Disney+ and streams on Hulu the next day.
