First Minecraft movie trailer shows Creepers, Piglins and Jack Black’s Steve

After years of casting rumors and speculation, we finally have our first official look at the live-action Minecraft movie – or “A Minecraft movie‘ is the official title, and it looks… well, about as terrifying as you’d expect from a live-action Minecraft movie.

Cinema release on 4 April 2025In the film, a group of ordinary people (played by Jason Mamoa, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Emma Myres and Danielle Brooks) are drawn through a mysterious portal into the blocky world of Mojang. There they meet “Expert Crafter” Jack Black Excuse me, Stevewho have to help them on their way home.

Here is the official plot description from the reveal trailer:

Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential for survival! Four outsiders – Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks) – are struggling with everyday problems when they’re suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal to the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they must master this world (and also protect it from evil things like piglins and zombies) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, skilled crafting expert, Steve (Black). Their adventure together will challenge all five to be brave and reconnect with the traits that make each of them uniquely creative… the very skills they need to compete in the real world again.

We’re not sure what we expected from the live-action film, but today’s trailer doesn’t exactly give us hope that it’ll be anything special. From the computer-generated rendering of the overworld to the “so, this just happened” dialogue (and don’t even get us started on the distorted Beatles track playing underneath it all), everything looks a little choppy.

But hey, there is a lot of talent here (And Mamoa in a particularly pretty pink jacket). Director: Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) with Oscar-winning production designer Grant Major and VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon on board, it would be too early to write it off completely. Plus, Mark Mothersbaugh is on composition duty, so the score should at least give us something to bop along to.

We will need more followers to achieve this goal.
