Further road closures due to flooding

SAN ANGELO, TX — US 87 north of Grape Creek has been closed due to flooding. That means three other major roads in the county are also affected by flooding. The sheriff said those roads, FM 2105, SH 208 and now FM 2288, are impassable.

Meanwhile, some schools and organizations are requesting a postponement of the opening to Tuesday, September 3, 2024 due to the heavy rains. San Angelo Police sent out an alert at 8:10 p.m. warning everyone to avoid crossings during low water levels until 11 p.m. due to the heavy rains.

Here are the rain delays that have been reported so far. Email (email protected) If you are late tomorrow morning, please let us know.

  • Grape Creek ISD – All schools: School opens at 10am and buses run two hours late.
  • Water Valley ISD – Classes have been canceled, as have practices and games. Flooding northwest of San Angelo is worse than in the city.
  • Veribest ISD – The buses are two hours late and stop at the cafeteria. Classes start at 10am.
  • Paint Rock ISD – 2 hour delay tomorrow. Buses will run 2 hours later than normal and classes will start at 10am
  • Miles ISD – Miles ISD announced this morning that the school district is canceling classes.
  • Irion County ISD – Cancelled. No school today.

Weather updates:

8:30 p.m. — The weather at Mathis Field is 700 feet of overcast and visibility is 3 land miles caused by moderate rain showers and fog. The wind is from the northeast at 6 knots. The forecast calls for rain throughout the night with no changes until 5 a.m. Tuesday. Weather radar shows a static rain shower system extending from Lubbock to San Angelo to Del Rio. The maximum height of the showers is 30,000 feet.

21:00 — Excessive precipitation is occurring in northern Tom Green County, Coke County and northern areas. As of 9 p.m., 2.86 inches of rain was recorded today at Mathis Municipal Airport in southwest San Angelo. Some rain gauges in northern Tom Green County are showing as much as 5 inches, according to the San Angelo National Weather Service. 3.25 inches fell today in Fort Chadbourne, north of Bronte. Sterling City also recorded 3.24 inches.

A flash flood warning is in effect for Brown, Callahan, Coke, Coleman, Concho, Crockett, Irion, Kimble, Mason, McCulloch, Menard, Nolan, Runnels, San Saba, Schleicher, Sterling, Sutton, Taylor and Tom Green counties.

The weather observer said the rain is caused by a stationary moisture area blocked by a weak low pressure area west of Midland and very moist air rising from the northeast beneath the low pressure area. No thunderstorms are forming, just heavy showers.

21:05 — The sheriff issued the following statement: “Avoid the northern part of Tom Green County. All roads are flooded. The main roads to avoid are FM 2105 and State Highway 208. All roads in Carlsbad and Quail Valley are flooded and inundated.”

21:30 – The San Angelo NWS issued a flash flood warning and extended it until 10:15 p.m. “Doppler radar and automatic rain gauges indicated thunderstorms with heavy rainfall throughout the warning area. Between 3 and 6 inches of rain have fallen. Precipitation amounts expected are 1 to 2 inches in 1 hour. Flash flooding is underway or expected to begin shortly.”

The sheriff announced that FM 2288 is flooded. “Water is overflowing,” the warning said. This is in addition to flooding the sheriff reported on FM 2105 and SH 208 in northern Tom Green County.

10:10 p.m. — The sheriff said U.S. 87 from Grape Creek and north was impassable due to flooding. Rain continued to pound throughout the region, with northern Tom Green County apparently the hardest hit. Many readers emailed or texted us photos of rain totals of over 6 inches throughout the region. The San Angelo NWS extended its flash flood warning (above) until 11:15 p.m.

9:30 a.m. — FM 1692, McMillian Road, Douglas Loop area is flooded and impassable, according to the sheriff.

9:50 am — The current observation at Mathis Municipal Airport is cloudy at 400 feet, winds from the east-northeast at 5 knots, moderate rain. The forecast calls for more of the same this afternoon.

10:30 a.m. — Traffic on U.S. 67 about 2 miles northeast of Miles is significantly slowed as water rushes over the highway. A number of vehicles waited while others drove slowly through the water. Some vehicles were parked on the side or stopped.

3.00 p.m. – The San Angelo Police Department issued an alert announcing the closure of Ben Ficklin Road due to flooding at 3:11 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. The road will remain closed until further notice.
