Starting this weekend, high school sports teams in the state will be back in action – Press Enterprise

The fall 2024 high school sports season has begun.

According to the CIF Southern Section calendar, the Inland girls volleyball and flag football teams can begin official play on Saturday, Aug. 10. The other fall sports will begin in the coming weeks.

Last year marked the first time girls’ flag football became an official CIF sport, and 18 schools nationally fielded teams in that inaugural season. That number could nearly double this year as the sport continues to grow rapidly. And for the first time, there will be enough flag football teams competing to make playoffs in the CIF Southern Section.

There are several girls volleyball tournaments taking place in the Inland area this weekend, including the Blackhawks Classic in Redlands (hosted by Citrus Valley), the Steel Town Classic in Fontana (hosted by Miller) and the Mustang Kickoff in Hemet (hosted by West Valley).

The boys water polo season will begin on Monday, August 12, while the cross country and girls tennis teams can begin official competition on Monday, August 19. Girls golf will be the last fall sport to begin with a start date of Monday, August 26.

Several in-state football teams will take the field for games in Week 0 (August 22-24), with some others waiting until next week for their season openers. Eight-man football teams can begin play on August 30.

Two inland football teams will get a head start on everyone else as Beaumont and Redlands both travel to Hawaii for their season opener on Thursday, August 15th.
