Man allegedly fled the scene of a fatal hit-and-run accident in Miami

MIAMI – Miami police announced Tuesday the arrest of a man who they said fled the scene of a hit-and-run crash early Monday morning that left one man dead and a woman injured.

According to Miami police, officers responded to the crash shortly after 3:30 a.m. Monday morning near the intersection of Southwest 42nd Avenue and Southwest Eighth Street, off LeJeune Road in the Little Gables neighborhood.

According to police, a man driving a 2013 Hyundai Sonata southbound on Southwest 42nd Avenue ran a red light and collided with a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe before hitting a palm tree and a second vehicle at the southwest corner of the intersection of Southwest 42nd Avenue and Southwest Eighth Street.

The Miami Fire Department confirmed that a 29-year-old man driving the Hyundai Sonata was pronounced dead at the scene by a non-firefighter paramedic, while a woman driving the third vehicle was taken to Coral Gables Hospital in stable condition.

According to a Miami Police Department report, the driver of the Chevy Tahoe, who they identified Tuesday as 50-year-old Gilbert Alexander Caro, fled the scene of the accident on foot and “did not render aid or call for assistance before fleeing.”

Investigators said a paper bag from Moshi Moshi, a Miami sushi restaurant, was found in Caro’s SUV. Phone records showed a food order was placed around the time of the crash, the report said.

The vehicles involved sustained significant damage. A pole was torn to pieces and a dented street sign lay in the Walgreens parking lot. There was broken glass everywhere.

Dr. Carlos Coro, who lives nearby and drives through the intersection twice a week, described the area as “very dangerous.” He said that accidents at the intersection are all too common and expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family.

“My goodness, the family – can you imagine her family?” said Coro.

According to authorities, a portion of LeJeune Road had to be temporarily closed due to the accident.

Police did not release the identity of the man who died in the crash.

Prison records show that Caro is facing charges of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Since Tuesday morning, the Venezuelan citizen has been held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bail has not yet been decided.
