Nancy Lieberman and Sheryl Swoopes end friendship because of argument with Caitlin Clark

Nancy Lieberman and Sheryl Swoopes have ended their friendship.

The two WNBA legends – and members of the Basketball Hall of Fame – are at odds over Caitlin Clark, particularly Swoopes’ past comments about the Fever’s rookie player when she questioned the legitimacy of Clark’s all-time points record at Iowa and claimed she still had a fifth year to break it.

Lieberman appeared on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” on Sunday and explained that Swoopes became angry with her when she confronted her about the issue on the phone.

“I called her as a friend and said, ‘You can say whatever you want… but the statistics have to be right. I mean, facts are important… It’s OK to have different opinions,'” Lieberman said.

“She was mad at me on the phone and I said, ‘Sheryl, I’m not doing anything to hurt you.’ … So our relationship is pretty much nonexistent right now. I tried to talk to her at the Final Four, but she wouldn’t talk to me. My life will be good or great with or without Sheryl Swoopes in my life. I’d rather have her there.”

Swoopes, who had been at odds with Smith over the Clark speech, responded to Lieberman, saying she would be better off without the friendship.

“Here you go! I understand what you’re trying to do with your boy @stephenasmith but it’s not working,” Swoopes wrote, attaching a video of Lieberman discussing the situation during an appearance on Smith’s show.

“You know exactly what happened. And the same goes for my life without you (and him). Do you want to go there?”

Swoopes was criticized for her unwillingness to acknowledge Clark’s star status.

The WNBA legend had previously denied having anything against Clark and praised her game.

Swoopes also said that Clark fans had been rude to her.

Fans began tweeting online when Swoopes was absent from the Fever-Wings broadcast on Sunday — and Lieberman commentated in her place.

Swoopes then reached out to X and shared screenshots of a text message exchange with Clark in which he apologized to her for her previous comments.

In a separate post, Swoopes wrote: “@stephenasmith put me on your show again! With or without your support @NancyLieberman.”

Swoopes had come under criticism for her previous comments about Clark during an appearance on Gilbert Arenas’ podcast in January.
