Humiliation on home soil: Pakistan beaten by Bangladesh and loses Test match in Rawalpindi by 6 wickets – Sport

Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by six wickets in the second Test to wrap up the series 2-0 in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

Zakir Hasan (40), Najmul Hossain Shanto (38) and Mominul Haq (34) made useful cameos as Bangladesh reached their winning target of 185 points with more than a session to spare.

With a target of 185 points for victory, the visitors slowly fought their way towards their target 25 minutes before tea on the fifth and final day, but lost four wickets in the process and closed the series 2-0.

Entering the fifth and final day’s play, Bangladesh continued their innings at 42-0, chasing their target of 185 runs. Pakistan made the first breakthrough after adding 16 runs when Mir dismissed Hamza Hasan with a delivery that went off.

Fellow pace bowler Khurram Shahzad got involved when Shadman Islam missed a drive and chipped the ball to Shan at mid-off.

However, with no further breakthroughs and the target too flat, Bangladesh consolidated their control of the match and the series, reaching the 100-run mark in the 29th over.

Najmul Hossain Shanto (33) and Mominul Haque (20) tried to prevent further advances, with the captain taking their partnership to 50 with the last ball before lunch.

Shanto was out after the lunch break and Mominul threw away his wicket, but veterans Mushfiqur Rahim, who made 22, and Shakib Al Hasan guided Bangladesh home without drama.

Shakib, who was 21 not out, sealed the win by hitting a four through covers to spinner Abrar Ahmed.

Bangladesh lead the two-match series 1-0 after a surprise win in Rawalpindi last month, their first in 14 Tests against Pakistan.

They have only won two away series – against West Indies in 2009 and Zimbabwe in 2021.

On the fourth day’s play on Monday, Hasan Mahmud took 5-43 and Nahid 4-44 – both career-best figures – to bowl Pakistan out for 172 in the second innings. Visiting openers Hasan and Islam raced to 42 without loss – Zakir hit two sixes and two boundaries – before rain clouds gathered and play was suspended one over after the tea break due to bad light.

Friday’s rain-affected friendly saw the first day’s matches cancelled, but Sunday saw a remarkable comeback from Bangladesh.

The visitors responded to Pakistan’s 274 in the first innings with 26-6 before Liton Das (138) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (78) put on a seventh-wicket partnership of 165 to enable Bangladesh to reach 262.

Pakistan reached their score of 9-2 to 47-2 in 10 overs on Monday before Bangladesh broke through with a series of three wickets for 18 runs.

Saim Ayub fell to 20 after a brilliant catch from Najmul Hossain at mid-off as the opener failed to stop a drive from fast bowler Taskin Ahmed.

Nahid then had Pakistan captain Masood caught behind after a wild drive from Liton before taking the valuable wicket of Azam in his next over, who was caught in slip after a sharp delivery.

Nahid grabbed his third by removing Shakeel and went into the lunch break with the score at 3-22 from five overs.
