US Open 2024 results: Jannik Sinner beats Tommy Paul, Daniil Medvedev destroys Nuno Borges and reaches the quarterfinals

It is the fifth time in the last six years that Medvedev has reached the last eight at Flushing Meadows.

The fifth seed suffered just one break during the match, when he lost 2-1 in the third set. Play was then suspended when a fire alarm went off in the building where the electronic line selection team is located.

There are no line judges at the US Open; all decisions are made using Hawkeye technology.

The building was evacuated, causing a brief halt in play before fifth-seeded Medvedev immediately bounced back, winning five of the next six games to advance.

Medvedev was then interviewed on court by Nick Kyrgios, who was the last player to defeat him before the quarterfinals in New York.

“The last time I lost in the fourth round was against you, right? Nice memories,” joked the 28-year-old.

“I try to work hard. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.

“I think that I have less chance of winning if the other person trains more than me. And I always want to win.”

Previously, Briton Jack Draper had reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal with an impressive victory in two sets over Tomas Machac.

He will play against 10th seed Alex de Minaur in the next round after the Australian defeated fellow countryman Jordan Thompson 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

After De Minaur played through the opening set without losing a game in just 29 minutes, Thompson fought back to win the second set, making the rest of the match much more exciting.

De Minaur secured victory after a turbulent fourth set, becoming the first Australian since Leyton Hewitt in 2004 to reach three consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinals.
