Philadelphia Eagles fans in Brazil no longer have access to X after the country confirmed the decision to block the social platform nationwide

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia Eagles fans traveling to Brazil on Friday for the NFL’s Week 1 game against the Green Bay Packers must expect not to have access to Elon Musk’s social media platform X during their stay abroad.

A panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court has upheld the decision of one of its judges to ban X nationwide, the court’s website said.

The broader support among the justices is a blow to Musk and his supporters, who had sought to portray Judge Alexandre de Moraes as a renegade and authoritarian censor of political expression.

The panel is made up of five of the 11 judges on the full panel, including de Moraes, who ordered the platform suspended last Friday for failing to appoint a local legal representative as required by law. X will remain suspended until it complies with its orders and pays outstanding fines, which, according to its decision last week, totaled over $3 million.

De Moraes also established a daily fine of 50,000 reais ($8,900) for individuals or companies using virtual private networks (VPNs) to access X. Some legal experts questioned the reasoning behind this decision and its enforcement. The Brazilian Bar Association announced it would ask the Supreme Court to review this provision.

But the majority of the panel on Monday upheld both the ban and the VPN penalty – a judge rejected the latter unless it can be proven that users are using X to commit crimes.

The historic first-ever game of the regular season will take place on Friday night of week one at the Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo, home of Brazilian football team SC Corinthians, and is part of the 2024 International Games. The stadium was an official host venue for both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.

“This groundbreaking first international game in South America demonstrates the ongoing expansion of our global presence,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said previously of the game. “The Friday night game of Week 1 is a unique opportunity to highlight our international growth and ambitions.”

According to the NFL, this is the first Friday night game on opening weekend in over 50 years.

Brazil is one of X’s biggest markets, with tens of millions of users. And the ban marked a dramatic escalation in a months-long dispute between Musk and de Moraes over free speech, far-right accounts and misinformation.
