Daniil Medvedev celebrates victory over Nuno Borges

Daniil Medvedev dropped only four games, easily defeated Nuno Borges and secured his place in the quarterfinals of the US Open.

The Russian Medvedev, champion in New York three years ago, had little trouble against the Portuguese and won 6:0, 6:1 and 6:3.

Medvedev is the only former US Open winner still in contention in New York and, alongside Jannik Sinner, the only Grand Slam singles winner.

He could potentially face world number one Sinner next, who beat him from two sets down in the Australian Open final in January.

It is the fifth time in the last six years that Medvedev has reached the round of eight at the US Open.

Medvedev was then interviewed on court by Nick Kyrgios, who was the last player to defeat him before the quarterfinals.

“The last time I lost in the fourth round was against you, right? Nice memories,” joked the 28-year-old.

“I try to work hard. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.

“I think that I have less chance of winning if the other person trains more than me. And I always want to win.”

Medvedev managed just one break in the match, when he was 2-1 down in the third set. The match was then suspended because a fire alarm went off in the building where the electronic line announcement team is located.

There are no line judges at the US Open; all decisions are made using Hawkeye technology.

The building was evacuated, causing a brief halt in play before fifth-seeded Medvedev immediately bounced back, winning five of the next six games to advance.

Sinner will face Arthur Ashe vs Tommy Paul later on Monday in the night session.

Previously, Briton Jack Draper had reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal with an impressive victory in two sets over Tomas Machac.
