Joey Chestnut vs. Takeru Kobayashi – Live Updates: Netflix’s “Unfinished Beef” pits two hot dog legends against each other in a direct duel

For the past two decades, Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi have been the two most recognizable names in the world of competitive eating. The Japanese star rose to prominence in 2001 when he won the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest with a record-breaking 50 hot dogs and buns – the first of six consecutive wins at Coney Island. In 2007, Chestnut took the stage and surpassed Kobayashi by eating 66 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes, which was a then-record.

The two are the only male competitors to win the competition more than four times – Kobayashi with six and Chestnut with 16. The two have not competed in the most famous competitive eating contest since 2009 after Kobayashi refused to sign an exclusive contract with Major League Eating and has not been seen at Coney Island since on July 4. This year, Chestnut missed out on a chance at a 17th Mustard Belt after signing a contract with another organization.

These paths now lead us to Netflix, where a 10-minute hot dog and bun eating contest takes place between the two greatest eaters of the 21st century.

Let the games begin.

Live15 updates

  • Matt Stonie easily beats three Olympians

Stonie slices the wings down to the bone with incredible efficiency and shovels the meat into his mouth with equally impressive, clinical skill. Meanwhile, the three Olympians eat at, you know, a normal pace.

Stonie takes the easy win by eating 53 wings, while the three Olympians eat a combined 36. It turns out that a high-calorie diet doesn’t always lead to faster training.

Stonie, with his mouth full of chicken and water, looks very pleased with the victory.

  • First, Matt Stonie will attempt to outdo a trio of Olympic athletes – water polo player Max Irving and swimmers Ryan Lochte and Ryan Murphy – with a tray full of chicken wings.

  • In particular, the hot dogs in today’s competition will not is the Nathan’s brand. Instead, they will use Ball Park Franks brand hot dogs with Great Value (Walmart brand) buns.

  • The main event begins in just under 40 minutes, but there will be a series of pre-eating contests beforehand.

One of the events will feature Matt Stonie, who shocked Chestnut in 2015 when he won Nathan’s hot dog eating contest with 62 hot dogs. Stonie is the only person to win the contest since 2001 who is not Chestnut or Kobayashi.

  • Let the games begin! Tonight’s event will be hosted by actor Rob Riggle and WWE wrestler Nikki Garcia and will include some introductory events.

In a dramatic video detailing the rivalry, Kobayashi compared the duel to a head-to-head contest between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

  • Chestnut currently holds the world record for hot dog eating contest after devouring 76 hot dogs and buns at the 2021 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

  • Takeru Kobayashi has arrived at the Luxor

  • New rules for Unfinished Beef

Today’s competition is subject to a set of rules that distinguish it from typical hot dog eating contests.

Two of the most common strategies in competitive eating – dunking hot dogs in water and separating the sausages from the buns – are not allowed. Additionally, there will be official referees counting each hot dog consumed, creating a somewhat more formal hot dog counting process that ensures accuracy. Rule violations, vomiting or even leftover crumbs can result in penalties.

  • Chestnut and Kobayashi have 10 minutes to crush the beef

The setup for today’s competition is simple: Similar to the Coney Island competition, Chestnut and Kobayashi have 10 minutes to eat as many hot dogs and buns as they can.

Since the competition is likely to be close, two overtimes are also planned. In the first overtime, Chestnut and Kobayashi have to eat as many hot dogs as possible in three extra minutes. In the second overtime, it’s all about speed. The first of the two to eat five hot dogs wins.

  • Kobayashi plans a big appearance for tonight’s showdown

    Via Google Translate:

I think I caused a lot of trouble for the Netflix team when it came to choosing my entrance music and what I would wear.

When something is made from scratch,

I say it doesn’t suit me and I don’t want to wear it. From someone like me, the answer is, “Very much.”

  • Check out this trophy 👀

It may not be the Mustard Belt, but it will look pretty tasty in the winner’s trophy case.

  • USC Marching Band takes part in “Unfinished Beef”

After a great night for the USC Trojans, who celebrated their season-opening win over LSU just across the I-15 at Allegiant Stadium, the Marching Band will spend the weekend in Sin City and will be on hand for the showdown between Chestnut and Kobayashi.

  • This is how the two eating icons prepare for a competition like this

  • In a warm-up phase before this late summer duel, Joey Chestnut faced a big challenge at Buffalo Wild Wings

  • A showdown that has developed over a decade and a half

After their legendary competitions at Coney Island, two giants of the world of competitive eating will share the stage for the first time in 15 years.
