Chiefs News: Clyde Edwards-Helaire placed on non-football injured list

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the non-football injured list, removing him from the active 53-man roster and meaning he will miss at least the first four games of the season. Kansas City plays Baltimore, Cincinnati, Atlanta and the Los Angeles Chargers during that period.

The 25-year-old Edwards-Helaire missed several training sessions during training camp because the club cited “illness” as the reason. In late July and early August, Edwards-Helaire spoke openly about what was bothering him.

Edwards-Helaire said his PTSD stems from an incident in college in which he and an LSU teammate killed someone who tried to rob them.

“I would say when this happens at such a young age,” he noted, “for the first few years you just try to block it all out and think, ‘Oh, I’ll get over it eventually.’ You start to realize that just doesn’t happen. You get older and you realize that everyone needs help at some point, no matter how old they are, no matter who they are, no matter what the situation.”

Edward-Helaire’s placement on the NFI list leaves Isiah Pacheco, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele in the running back room. Head coach Andy Reid will wrap up “game week” media with a press conference on Tuesday, where he should reveal more about Edward-Helaire’s status.

The Chiefs open their season at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night.
