Dispute between DirecTV and Disney quickly turns ugly

On Sunday, the broadcast dispute between Disney and DirecTV resulted in all Disney-owned networks disappearing from DirecTV’s satellite and streaming services.

Usually, such disputes degenerate into predictable blame games, with the provider blaming the networks and the networks blaming the providers – although the truth is usually that they are all to blame.

As noted by Sports business reporter Daniel Kaplan on X, a Press release from DirecTV complements the typical They are stingy And They are greedy These claims relate to the recent legal battle that has upended (for now and possibly forever) the mega sports streamer planned by Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery.

“Just hours before today’s deadline, Disney demanded that in order to reach a licensing agreement or extend access to its programming, DIRECTV must waive all claims that Disney’s conduct was anticompetitive,” DirecTV claims. “In addition, any future lawsuits arising from the licensing agreements between DIRECTV and Disney would be heard in California – not New York – because – as Disney’s attorney explicitly stated – SDNY Judge Garnett ‘did not understand the issues’ when he issued a preliminary injunction against Disney’s Venu Sports. Disney’s last-minute demands to bar any legal responsibility for its growing pattern of anticompetitive conduct should be of concern to pro-consumer advocacy groups, regulators and Justice Department lawyers alike.”

The current dispute affects all DirecTV customers, from traditional satellite users to DirecTV Stream to U-verse, and comes a year after a dispute between Disney and Charter Communications from late August until the day Disney-owned content was kept off the service, at which point no Disney content was available on the service it belonged to, of which they no longer had anything to offer. Monday Night Football started, with the Jets hosting the Bills.

In a week in 2024 Monday Night Football begins with the game between the 49ers and the Jets.
