NYT “Connections” September 2: Answers, clues for game #449

The New York Times continues to be successful with its daily online puzzles, with Connections is another example.

The daily puzzle consists of 16 seemingly randomly selected words grouped together in a box.

The goal is to find four words that fit together to form a category, resulting in a total of four groups.

Each category is divided into four colours. The easier and often more obvious group of four becomes yellow when found all together, followed by green, blue and finally the most difficult or less obvious group, which is purple.

Basically, once you find a group of four connected words, they are removed from the game and cannot be selected again when trying to find a connection between the remaining words.

The user has four attempts, or lives, to correctly guess the four groups. If they fail to make all four connections, the answers and the corresponding difficulty color are revealed at the end of the game.

Connections was launched in June 2023 and is now the news channel’s second most played game after the mega hit Wordle.

Wyna Liu, Connections Editor, previously answered a number of questions about the game for The New York Times.

When asked what tips she can give players, Liu said, “One suggestion that can help avoid some guesswork is: When you start selecting cards and find that five or more of them belong to that category, try moving to another category before you make your first attempt.”

“This way, one of those extra cards can be taken out of the running, or at least some cards can be removed from the board, making other categories easier to identify.”

Liu also confirmed that the original placement of the 16 words at the beginning of each game was intentional, which could lead players to think they are connected even though they are not the answer the game is looking for.

Below, Newsweek has offered some hints about the categories and the solution to Monday’s game.
