Hollywood Brown’s return schedule

As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare to kick off the NFL season on Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens, head coach Andy Reid delivered the team’s typical midweek injury update on Sunday with a clean report, with one exception. Wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown will not practice on Sunday as expected.

“Marquise is the only one not training today,” Reid said.

This report is great news for the other 52 members of the Chiefs’ newly formed 53-man roster. It means veteran defensive linemen like defensive tackle Chris Jones and safety Justin Reid will continue to practice after sitting out the entire preseason. However, Brown’s absence will be felt as the Chiefs begin the year against the team that drafted him in 2019.

After suffering a sternoclavicular joint injury on the Chiefs’ first offensive play of the preseason on August 10, it seemed unlikely that Brown would be ready for the season opener. Although the team will get additional rest before its Week 2 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, it is currently difficult to predict how long Brown’s recovery will take.

When Jordan Foote from Kansas City Chiefs on SI wrote at the time of the injury, the best comparison for Brown seems to be the same type of injury suffered by Tyreek Hill in 2019. Hill missed the Chiefs’ next four regular season games. He sustained the injury on Sept. 8 and returned on Oct. 13. Hill played in one NFL game after a 35-day window existed between his injury and his return to play. The period from Aug. 10 to Sept. 15, when the Chiefs host the Bengals, is 36 days for Brown.

To be clear, there’s no way to predict with any certainty whether Brown Hill will be on schedule, behind schedule, or on schedule. Because the injury is so rare, we have fewer examples of how long it takes, on average, for players to return.

On one hand, Reid said Friday that Brown is “amazing” and that “his progress has been incredible.” On the other hand, Reid virtually ruled out the team’s No. 1 wide receiver for nearly a full week before the game rather than dragging out the injury status all week, perhaps to get the Ravens to think about how they would handle Brown if he recovered surprisingly quickly. Unfortunately for the player and the team, the Browns’ debut at the Chiefs will be delayed at least a week. The good news is that barring an injury in practice, KC should otherwise start the year healthy if they go on to have their third consecutive winning season.
