Bremen High School football player recovers in hospital after serious injury during football game

The Bremen High School quarterback is said to be in good spirits after suffering a serious injury during a game on Friday.

Carson Kimball suffered a severe spinal injury that left him without feeling in his legs during Friday’s rivalry game against Bowdon High School. He underwent surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is currently recovering.

Bremen Fire and EMS rushed to the field after Kimball was attacked during a game. BHS Principal Tim Huff told FOX 5 Atlanta it was clear Kimball was injured when he fell to the ground.

“It was packed, standing room only and it was totally silent for probably 20 minutes, like it was the EMTs stabilizing him on a backboard and bringing the guy out to pick him up,” Huff said. “It wasn’t like anything malicious happened. It wasn’t like he just took this horrific hit, you know, he’s just a good kid just playing football, a game he loves, and it’s hard to put it into words because it just didn’t look that bad.”

But the injuries were severe. Huff says Carson’s C6 vertebrae were severely damaged. Carson’s father confirmed that his son underwent surgery on Saturday and that he “has not yet regained feeling in his lower body” and “has a long recovery ahead of him.”

“They said the surgery was a success,” Huff said. “He passed some tests at the hospital today and is now able to eat and drink on his own, which is great.”

Huff went on to say that Carson’s stance was perhaps the most positive sign yet.

“He’s optimistic. He’s full of hope. I mean, when I walked into the room, he reached out, grabbed mine, and I asked him what he wanted to say to the students here at school. He said, tell them I love them. And that I’m going to get out of here soon.”

The Bremen community is supporting Carson and his family. A T-shirt fundraiser has already been launched for him and a GoFundMe campaign to help with medical costs has been launched. More than $25,000 has been raised so far.

“Bremen is special. It’s not the first time they’ve rallied behind an individual. It’s really hard to imagine. Maybe it was like that all over the world, but I don’t think it’s like that. I mean, this is a special place,” Huff said.

FOX 5 will continue to keep you updated on Carson’s condition.
