The Ambergs’ marriage was coming to an end. In order to turn things around for the better, Barbara and Ralph set off on a journey to the idyllic landscape of the Yorkshire moors. Their accommodation for the stay: an old and rustic country house with the impressive name Westwill House. But the short trip quickly turns into something longer, as a sudden onset of winter completely snows the house in and cuts it off from the outside world. Actually an ideal situation to work on her marriage, but while doing the traditional things of the house, Barbara gets stuck on a biography. A biography about a strong and freedom-seeking woman who once called Westwill House her home: Frances Gray. As she reads, Barbara is confronted with the fateful twists and turns of several families that were changed by terrible events in the First and Second World Wars. And she comes across the sad end that the Gray sisters Frances and Victoria share.

After a brief detour into the present, you spend part of this exciting work in the past, where Charlotte Link once again proves her skills. There, the author succeeds in portraying the horror of war and the associated changes in the individual, well-developed characters in a gripping and extremely realistic way. Both the stories set in the present and the past convince with a strong arc of suspense that leads you astray now and then and surprises you with unpredictable twists.
A cozy and innocent-looking farmhouse hides a bitter past that is soon revealed by new visitors.
