Texas’s back-to-school sales tax-free weekend is here

If you’ve been putting off your shopping for the new school year, your procrastination could pay off for once. Friday marks the start of Texas’ three-day tax holiday on back-to-school items. No sales tax means you’ll save about eight dollars for every hundred dollars you spend through Sunday. And you’ll probably spend hundreds.

The National Retailers Federation projects that families with school-age children will spend $875 on their back-to-school purchases this year. That means a family spending the full $875 will save $70 in sales tax.

Kevin Lyons of the Texas Comptroller’s Office says, “With inflation and people wanting to save every dollar, it’s certainly possible on holidays like this. You buy the things you need for your kids, your loved ones and yourself, and you can save the taxes that come with it. You can save the money.”

In fact, according to retailers, school supplies only make up about 20% of a family’s back-to-school purchases. But luckily, Texas’s sales tax-free period also applies to clothing, shoes and backpacks, as long as you don’t go overboard. Sales tax-free period rules state that the item cannot cost more than $100, so expensive high-tops will require you to pay full sales tax.

And please note that this is a sales tax-free period in Texas. If you are shopping in person in Texas, this is not a problem. However, if you are shopping online, you must buy from an online retailer that does business in Texas to enjoy the sales tax savings.

There are always rules. Click here to find out the details.
