A new six-CD edition of Porcupine Tree’s Grammy-nominated 2007 album Fear of an empty planet The album will be released on October 25th via Transmission Records. You can watch a video trailer for the reissue below.
The new deluxe edition includes five CDs and a Blu-ray as well as a 112-page hardcover book and is probably the most complete collection of the album and related material to date, with remasters of Fear of an empty planet and the Zero Recurring Mini-album, about 55 minutes of previously unreleased demos, an early live performance of a work-in-progress version of the album, and recordings from BBC and in-store sessions.
The new book includes an in-depth examination of the album’s creation process by Stephen Humphries, with interviews and rare photographs by photographers Lasse Hoile and Carl Glover.
The set includes new 2024 remasters of the original album and the Zero Recurring EP, approximately 55 minutes of previously unreleased demos from both the band and Steven Wilson, offering a rare insight into the album’s creative process, including two tracks that were not recorded for the final album.
There is also a live recording of a work-in-progress version of the album recorded at The Garage in Saarbrücken on 23 September 2006, when the band were still refining and developing the material, mixed for this edition for the first time from the multi-track tapes, a five-song BBC radio session (Maida Vale Studios, 13 April 2007) and an eight-song acoustic/unplugged in-store performance from Park Avenue, Orlando (4 October 2007).
The set also includes remastered stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes of Fear of an empty planet And Zero Recurringa new documentary from 2024 – The creation of “Fear Of A Blank Planet”plus three music videos, three songs performed live at the Palladium, Cologne (4 December 2007) and two live visual films; Sleeping together And Stun.
Fear of an empty planet was a concept album inspired by the novel by Bret Easton Ellis Moon Parkabout how the teenage protagonist fights his deadly boredom and attention deficit disorder with prescription drugs, television, computer games, senseless violence, senseless sex and self-harm. The album features guest appearances by Robert Fripp of King Crimson and Alex Lifeson of Rush.
