Remedy and Annapurna sign deal to finance Control 2 and bring the series and Alan Wake to television and cinema

Annapurna and Remedy have signed an agreement that will allow Annapurna to finance 50% of the upcoming Control 2.

With the deal, Annapurna also secures the film and television rights to “Control” and its sister series “Alan Wake”.

It is part of Remedy’s efforts to self-publish some of its titles.

The press release states that as a result of this deal, Remedy will receive a “large share of revenue” from game sales after recouping initial investments, while Annapurna will receive a large share of film and television sales.

Full intellectual property rights to Alan Wake and Control remain with Remedy, while Annapurna owns the licensing rights to Control and Alan Wake in television, films and other “select audiovisual” media.

The horror game Alan Wake 2 was funded and published by Epic Games last year, and although it hasn’t yet turned a profit, it was Remedy’s fastest-selling game and a huge critical success.

It is the sister series to Control. The first Control game, published by 505 Games, sold over four million copies and grossed €100 million. Control 2 was also supposed to be published by 505, but Remedy bought back the publishing rights earlier this year.

“At Remedy, we remain focused on what we do best: creating industry-defining video games that have earned us global recognition,” said Tero Virtala, CEO of Remedy Entertainment.

“Now is the right time to expand the reach of Remedy’s beloved franchises to an even broader global audience through film, television and more. In Annapurna, we have found an outstanding partner who shares our ambition and passion for immersive storytelling. We are delighted that, thanks to this unique agreement, they will bring the universes and characters we have created to life in new media.”

He added: “We know Annapurna shares our passion for our intellectual properties and the universes we have created. With award-winning films like Zero Dark Thirty and games like Stray, Annapurna’s expertise in film, television and video games makes them an ideal partner for us. This agreement will ensure we can develop Control 2 into the best game possible and allows us to begin self-publishing select titles and expand our franchises into other media.”

Megan Ellison, Founder and CEO of Annapurna, added: “By leveraging Remedy’s innovative storytelling and immersive worlds, we can push the boundaries of how stories are told and experienced across media.”

Hector Sanchez, President of Interactive and New Media at Annapurna, continued, “This deal with Remedy isn’t just about adapting great games – it’s about breaking new ground in how companies work together. By supporting Remedy’s move toward self-publishing, we’re putting our faith in their vision. We know from experience that Remedy is a world-class partner for game development, and we’re excited to bring their work to an even wider audience by bringing the Control and Alan Wake universes to film, television, and beyond.”

In addition to Control 2, Remedy is also developing the Control multiplayer spin-off “Condor”, DLC for Alan Wake 2 and remakes of Max Payne 1 and 2 for Rockstar.
