Apple has announced that its next major product launch will take place on September 9, with an official unveiling of the iPhone 16 lineup almost guaranteed.
Those looking to snap up an iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, or iPhone 16 Pro Max are no doubt thinking about pre-orders—and helpfully, we can look to past years to estimate when iPhone 16 pre-orders might go live.
As 9to5Mac reports, the previous three iPhone generations were announced during the week, usually on a Tuesday, and pre-orders began on the Friday of the same week.
Since the event is taking place on Monday, September 9th this year, we can fairly safely predict that pre-orders for the iPhone 16 range will be available on Friday, September 13th.
We can also assume that Apple will not stagger iPhone pre-orders, as it only recently did so in the unique climate of 2020 during the pandemic, so our prediction holds no matter which model you’re looking for.
iPhone release dates are showing a similar pattern, which we covered in our roundup of the latest iPhone 16 release date predictions.
Rumors about iPhone 16 pre-order
As we’ve found from various sources, the consensus seems to be that iPhone 16 pre-orders will begin on Friday, September 13th – reports from The Independent, Forbes, and Tom’s Guide support this.
However, some rumors suggest a slightly different date. For example, a vague rumor from the German blog Macerkopf says the pre-order date will be Thursday, September 12th.
However, we don’t believe this rumor has any credibility. As MacRumors notes, the blog didn’t provide a source or a reason for the change from Friday to Thursday.
And while it’s unusual for Apple to host an event on a Monday, it’s not the first time the company has deviated from hosting its September event on a Tuesday. The iPhone 14 was unveiled on a Wednesday, with preorders available the following Friday as usual.
As for the cost of the new range, we expect prices to remain stable year-on-year, with the base iPhone 16 model starting at $799/£799/AU$1,499 – although reports from last year about increased production costs for the iPhone 16 suggest a price increase is not out of the question.
Apple will likely officially confirm the pre-order date at the same time as the iPhone 16 family announcement, so we won’t have to wait long to see if our prediction is correct.
As Apple’s It’s Glowtime event approaches, we have the latest reports on the iPhone 16 and other expected products like the Apple Watch 10, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and iOS 18.
