Kieran Trippier: England defender announces retirement from national team

English defender Kieran Trippier has announced his retirement from international football.

The 33-year-old played 54 international matches and scored his only goal in the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup in Moscow against Croatia.

The Newcastle right-back, who made his debut under former manager Gareth Southgate in 2017, has captained the England national team three times.

“As a young lad from Bury, I never imagined I would play for my country, let alone win 54 caps,” Trippier posted on social media.

“It was one of the greatest honours of my life to represent my country in four major tournaments.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to Gareth and all the staff who have worked with the England team for the trust they have shown in me over the years.”

Trippier was a mainstay under Southgate and started England’s first six games at Euro 2024, but was dropped from the squad for the final in favour of Luke Shaw.

He was also in the starting line-up for the 2020 European Championship final defeat to Italy and was a regular at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

England caretaker manager Lee Carsley will announce his first squad for the Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September at 2pm (BST).

“Thank you to all my teammates. We have had some very special moments reaching two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final. I am sure that this group of players will win a major tournament in the future,” he added.

“I would like to wish Lee, the coaching staff and the team all the best for the future.

“And finally, a big thank you to all the England fans for their incredible support. They have travelled all over the world to support us and give us strength in the difficult moments.”
