Netflix has a new number one movie

There’s a new number one movie on Netflix, and it’s the kind of movie you don’t see in the theater that often anymore.

Incoming is currently the most successful Netflix film in the US. Worldwide, it has not yet managed to overshadow The Union, starring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry. But considering the relatively small star cast, this new comedy is doing quite well.

Even the summary of the key lines is more similar to what we saw in the 2000s and early 2010s than what we see today.

“Incoming is the story of one night in the life of a group of high school freshmen, the party they crash, and the chaos that ensues,” the official synopsis reads.

The film stars Mason Thames, Ramon Reed and Raphael Alejandro as our trio of freshmen struggling through their first year of college.

Like many original films of this style from decades past, Incoming hasn’t exactly received positive reviews from critics. But they haven’t all trashed the film either.

The Roger Ebert website gave Incoming a strong 3/4 rating, saying, “The jokes are funny (sometimes laugh-out-loud funny), mostly because they’re not afraid to be a little snarky – a trait that many recent comedies that try to win over audiences in a fake way could learn from.”

Ready Steady Cut gave the film a solid 3/5 rating. “Despite the lack of shock factor, Incoming is carried by its comedy. The use of the young leads works well. It’s full of energy,” the review says.

If you dig deeper, you’ll find many critics saying that Incoming isn’t funny, but just bad or unoriginal. But R-rated comedies like this don’t come along every day.

“Incoming” comes from screenwriters and directors Dave and John Chernin, who were part of the writing team of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
