Chinese manufacturer Tecno has unveiled a concept smartphone just days after competitor Huawei confirmed that a triple-folding device was on the way.
As GSMArena reports, the Phantom Ultimate 2 concept features a 6.48-inch external screen and a 10-inch internal screen, an LTPO OLED panel with a resolution of 1620 x 2880 and an aspect ratio of 4:3.
Elsewhere, BGR reports that the Phantom Ultimate 2 is just 11mm thick when folded, which is 1.1mm thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, although the video shows an increase in thickness around the camera bump and it’s not clear how that measurement was taken.
The new phone also features OLED Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI), which places the display driver and touch sensor on the same chip.
Tecno introduced the device concept with a short video demonstrating the dual-hinged device in different scenarios, such as using a segment of the screen as a keyboard in a laptop-like configuration or setting up the display in “tent mode” to perform real-time AI translation.
However, since the Phantom Ultimate 2 is a concept phone, it is still unclear whether it will go into production – the same goes for its predecessor, the Phantom Ultimate, which was unveiled in August 2023 with a rolling screen.
We should also note that this is a concept phone that we cannot test, so we have no way of verifying whether the alleged features are complete or functional.
The race for third place
In fact, the timing of this new reveal is almost as telling as the video itself. Tecno’s announcement comes at a time when the race to release the world’s first tri-fold device is heating up.
On August 19, Yu Chengdong (also known as Richard Yu), CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, confirmed that a Huawei tri-fold device will be released in September.
If Huawei sticks to this schedule, the company has a good chance of being the first company in the world to bring a triple-folding device to consumers, after months of rumors and prototypes from several manufacturers.
In May, Creative Block reported that Chinese semiconductor maker TCL CSOT had unveiled its unnamed tri-fold prototype at the Society for Information Display’s Display Week event. And in July, Honor filed a patent for a tri-fold design, although no development was confirmed.
As for Samsung, rumors of a tri-folding Galaxy Z Fold have been circulating all year, although no details have been available online.
Although the Phantom Ultimate 2 is still a concept, it’s a clear sign that tri-fold phones are on the minds of forward-thinking designers. We’re thinking about it too, so stay tuned. our smartphone news for the latest updates on the triple leaflet edition.
