BUNNELL, Florida. – More and more bullets are hitting people’s homes in Flagler County.

One viewer said he was struggling with the same problem after seeing a report on FOX 35 about a couple who were arrested for shooting at and damaging a neighbor’s property.

Don Barwick, a native of Florida and a staunch Second Amendment believer, said he never imagined his house would be hit by bullets.

“We went to Biketoberfest in Daytona and when we returned we discovered the holes in our master bathroom,” he said.

It happened in October 2023.

Barwick said: “(The bullets) hit a door frame, ricocheted off the door, hit the door and fell directly to the floor.”

His horse trailer was also hit by bullets, he said. Barwick and his wife, Dawn, owned four horses at the time of the shooting. He said those horses were in the fenced yard behind the trailer and that, miraculously, bullets missed them.

Fearing for his family’s safety, he filed a report. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said it was one of the neighbors who fired shots that struck his home. The report also mentioned that another neighbor “suffered a damaged windshield from gunfire” on his classic Ford Mustang.

The report said target practice was responsible for the illegal bullets. Charges were filed but were ultimately dropped. Barwick must pay $14,000 to repair the damage to his property, he said.

Florida State Law 790.15 prohibits the reckless or negligent discharge of a firearm in public, on paved public streets, over residential areas, and on private property.

“People don’t understand that once the bullet leaves the barrel, it’s theirs. You have the right to use your property and practice shooting. I’m all for practice. Practice makes perfect, but within reason,” said Gunnar Farias, the owner of Tower Guns and Training.

“Someone could have lost their life; we could have lost one of our animals or dogs,” Barwick said.
