Leeds United podcast: “Illan Meslier deserves recognition”

BBC Radio Leeds’ Jonny Buchan spoke about Whites goalkeeper Illan Meslier in Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet: “Leeds have kept more clean sheets in 2024 than any other team in the top four English leagues, namely 16.

“Illan Meslier has the best clean sheet percentage of any goalkeeper in Championship history at 48%.

“You can also attribute that to the team in front of him, but no matter how you look at it, it’s still a great statistic for Meslier.”

Kaiser Chiefs bassist Simon Rix said: “We always criticise the goalkeepers. We have never had a goalkeeper that we were happy with for years because they always concede goals at some point and you can criticise them for the goals they let in, but I am very happy with him.

“I think he is more than adequate as a goalkeeper in the Championship. We tried to buy a replacement in (Karl) Darlow but from what we have seen of him, I think he is much, much worse than Meslier.

“If Meslier were to move to another club, we would look at him and think we should have kept him.”

Leeds reporter Adam Pope added: “Meslier does a few things that make you think, “Why did you do that, that’s a bit weird?”

“He doesn’t always dominate his area but he makes some incredible saves, so I always feel it’s not because of him that Leeds generally play really well at the back.”

“For me, it’s a combination of all five and he was really the one who stayed consistent while others changed. So you have to give him credit even if you don’t particularly like him or want him to go. You have to give him credit for growing into that role.”
