Woman dies on way to work when wrench crashes through windshield

MONTGOMERY, Alabama (WSFA/Gray News) – The family of a woman killed in a freak accident is searching for answers.

Earlie Harris died after a wrench flew through the windshield of the car she was driving on Interstate 65 earlier this month.

Her family says they are still trying to come to terms with her tragic death.

“She was the glue that held everything together. I mean, through good times and bad, she was always there,” said her son Cedric Harris.

Cedric Harris was driving his mother to work that day when the wrench went through the windshield, striking and killing Earlie Harris.

“Suddenly something flew through the window. I ducked and looked up. My mother was bleeding. Then I drove off the highway,” he said.

The Harris family still doesn’t know exactly where the wrench came from. They believe it came from a truck traveling north on I-65. They are working with the law firm Beasley Allen to find the driver of the vehicle the wrench came from.

“This is something that cannot be missed. Someone out there saw the object fall and bounce in the street,” said attorney LaBarron Boone. “It didn’t hit her and maybe they just kept walking, but in the end Mrs. Earlie Harris died, an incredible servant.”

The Harris family just wants answers. They say Earlie Harris was a loving mother and grandmother.

The law firm is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the identification of the driver.

Police said the investigation was ongoing.
