NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City driver was arrested and accused of throwing a lit firework into a Verizon transit truck in an apparent act of road rage, injuring two workers, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

Kevindale Nurse, 36, was driving a commuter “Dollar Van” in the Brooklyn borough around 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 31 when he cut off the Verizon van, according to authorities.

Surveillance camera footage showed him driving erratically, stopping his van next to the Verizon vehicle, opening the door and throwing the explosive device into the truck’s driver’s window, prosecutors said. Nurse, who was traveling with his four-year-old son, then sped off to the right when the light was red.

According to prosecutors, the two Verizon employees suffered numerous injuries, including tinnitus, hearing loss, and neck and back pain. Their vehicle was also badly damaged, including a broken windshield and airbags being deployed.

The Brooklyn man, who declined to comment through his attorney, was arrested Thursday morning after a federal indictment against him was released on arson charges. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody during a hearing in federal court in Brooklyn later Thursday.

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Breon Peace said in a statement that the “dangerous and senseless attack on a busy intersection in the heart of Brooklyn was intolerable.”

Prosecutors asked the court to detain Nurse because he posed a significant danger to the public, pointing out that he could have caused even greater harm and possibly even death because the van was full of equipment used to repair high-speed fiber optic data lines.

They also said Nurse had previously been convicted of serious crimes, including attempted reckless endangerment and driving without a license.

According to prosecutors, if convicted of the latest charges, Nurse faces a minimum sentence of seven years and a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

Dollar vans, many of them unlicensed, compete with taxis and limousines to fill gaps in New York City’s public transportation system.
