The idea of kids bringing cell phones to school just started popping up when I was in high school.
In my senior year, most of us had cell phones, but using them during class wasn’t even common.
If a teacher catches you using your cell phone during class, you can bet they will keep it until the end of the day and in some cases even longer!
On the other hand, I grew up in a time when most children were more afraid of their parents than of authority.
In other words, children did not argue with their teachers as much as they do today because they knew that their parents would be much stricter with them than the principal.
Governor Greg Gianforte recently called on Montana school superintendents and school boards to implement a new cell phone policy in schools.
He called on state leaders to establish a cell phone-free policy, which he said would reduce distractions during school hours.
Impact of mobile phones in schools
There is no denying that cell phones have become a significant distraction in schools across the country.
A 2023 report by Common Sense Media found that 97% of 11- to 17-year-olds regularly use their mobile phones during school hours.
This includes everything from texting to social media to streaming videos.
Montana School Cell Phone Policy
Some school districts in Montana have already implemented cell phone restrictions, but the governor’s office’s latest initiative aims to enforce these restrictions statewide.
The goal is to create a more productive learning environment throughout Montana.
