Mental health specialist from Oregon is surprised with the Never Quit Service Award at the congress

Amy Simpson is an Oregon psychiatrist who relies on her own experiences and struggles to connect with her patients.

“I help bridge the gap between addiction support and domestic violence support, and I am an art therapist and drug and alcohol counselor,” said the member of OregonAFSCME in a video that was released during the 46th AFSCME International Conference. “I introduce them to media and options to explore and express themselves, and that creates an atmosphere of relaxation and trust where I think they feel comfortable and start talking.”

For her service to the community, Simpson won the AFSCME “Never quit the service” awardwhose goal is to recognize public service employees who go above and beyond the call of duty to improve their communities.

AFSCME President Lee Saunders surprised Simpson with the award on Wednesday on the third day of the convention.

One of her clients, Chelsey Darnell, had her child taken away by child services before she sought help for substance abuse. With Simpson’s help, she was able to get her child back.

“I don’t think I would be in the position I’m in right now without Amy’s help,” Darnell said on the convention stage on Wednesday. “You have to be tough to overcome an addiction and come out on the road to recovery. You have to be even tougher to guide others through the process.”

Simpson suffered from a substance use disorder herself and used that experience to build a career helping people overcome their addiction.

Accepting the Never Quit Award, Simpson said, “Thank you to AFSCME for this recognition. Throughout my years as an addict, then through my recovery and my work, I have done everything out of passion…for healing. I have been fortunate to receive the helping hand of many people who work in social services. And their drive and passion to give and heal have inspired me.”

She praised AFSCME for giving her the support she needs.

“I am so honored to be a member of AFSCME and to work with the union that supports me in my work and helps my colleagues represented by AFSCME gain the respect and rights they deserve,” Simpson said tearfully.
