Southampton News: Russell Martin satisfied with previous transfer deals

Russell Martin says Southampton’s deals this summer were good for the “long-term and short-term future of the club”.

The Saints have so far signed 11 new players for their squad and have also converted the loan deals of Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes into permanent transfers.

“We did good business in this window,” Martin said.

“Eighteen months to two years ago, in the January transfer window, it was all about spending money on the here and now because we have to stay in the Premier League.

“We all agreed that we would not do that and that this would potentially put the club in a dangerous position. We have signed players for the moment who will be really good in the long term.”

In the January 2023 transfer window mentioned by Martin, Southampton broke its transfer record and signed winger Kamaldeen Sulemana for a transfer fee of over 20 million.

They also brought Paul Onuachu and Carlos Alcaraz into the team, although the three had only made 104 appearances since their signing.

“Obviously I would love to spend £25-£30m on one or two players, but we knew we wouldn’t do that and that’s the situation we’re in,” Martin added.

“It doesn’t give me sleepless nights because we are all on the same page and know exactly what we are doing.”
