What are the most expensive jerseys worn by sport? Could one break Babe Ruth’s record?

Babe Ruth’s “Called Shot” jersey from the 1932 World Series sold for $24.12 million over the weekend, making it the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever. But what are the most expensive jerseys worn in other sports right now, which one could break the new record, and which one could be the first women’s sports jersey to break the $1 million mark? We asked the experts.

Jordan 1998 NBA Finals Game 1 – $10.091 million

This jersey previously held the record for the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia (excluding trading cards) of all time before it was surpassed by the Ruth jersey. “The Last Dance,” ESPN’s 10-part documentary about Michael Jordan and the 1997-98 Bulls, debuted in 2020 and fueled the already high interest in Jordan merchandise as well as items related to the 1998 Finals. Two years later, the jersey Jordan wore in Game 1 of the series, which played a major role in “The Last Dance,” went under the hammer.

Jordan scored 33 points in Game 1, but the Utah Jazz beat his Bulls 88-85 in overtime. Yes, the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia in the world in recent years was a jersey worn by Michael Jordan in a game he didn’t even win. Of course, the Bulls won the series 4-2 and claimed their sixth and final NBA title in eight years.

Maradona, 1986 World Cup quarter-finals – $9.28 million

Before the Jordan jersey, this jersey held the record for sports memorabilia… for a few months, anyway. Although this jersey was “only” worn in one quarter-final, Diego Maradona wore it when he performed not one, but two of the most iconic moves in soccer history. In the second half of the quarter-final between Argentina and England, Maradona broke a goalless stalemate by scoring two goals in four minutes – initially in highly controversial fashion, by jumping up and firing the ball into the English net with his hand. The referee thought he had used his head instead of his hand and allowed the goal. Nicknamed “The Hand of God,” the goal remains one of the most talked about and hotly debated moments in World Cup history.

But Maradona was not finished yet. Shortly afterwards, he scored what is known as the ‘Goal of the Century’, running through England’s defenders and scoring an incredible solo goal that reflected his brilliance as a player and that fans still adore today. Argentina won the match 2-1 and claimed their second World Cup title.

Maradona wore a different shirt in each half of the quarter-final against England, but the shirt sold in 2022 was photocopied with the second half in which he scored both goals. For reference, six Lionel Messi shirts worn during Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory run sold for a combined $7.8 million last year. Despite Messi’s enormous popularity, the legend Maradona and those memorable two goals are still the undisputed leader among football shirts.

Gretzky 1988 Stanley Cup Game 4 – $1.452 million

This is the last jersey “The Great One” wore as a member of the Oilers before moving on to the LA Kings, St. Louis Blues and then the New York Rangers. It was also the jersey he wore when he won the Stanley Cup for the fourth and final time with the Oilers after they beat the Boston Bruins in four games. That fourth game was a strange one, though – with the score tied in the second period, the power went out at the Boston Garden, forcing the game to be suspended. Then NHL President John Ziegler decided that at the end of the series, the game should be replayed in Boston if necessary. Two days later, the series resumed in Edmonton and the Oilers completed the sweep, with Wayne Gretzky scoring a goal and adding two assists.

The jersey is “covered with champagne stains from the championship celebration, stick and puck marks, loose threads and numerous repairs to the sleeves,” according to the listing from Grey Flannel Auctions, which sold it in 2022.

Brady 2022 Tampa Bay Buccaneers – $1.391 million

Tom Brady threw for 329 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the 2022 NFC Divisional Playoff game between the Buccaneers and the Los Angeles Rams, but it wasn’t enough. The Rams won 30-27 after the Buccs overcame a 27-3 deficit to win the Super Bowl on their home field. For Tom Brady, however, January 23 in Tampa marked the end of a legendary career that included a record seven Super Bowl victories.

Unlike the previously mentioned jerseys, this one is signed. And Brady not only signed it, but also added a unique inscription: “My last game, GOAT out!”

But despite this minor quirk, and the fact that football is now by far the most popular sport in the United States, the record-breaking jersey sold for less than the record-breaking jerseys for baseball, basketball, soccer and hockey. The other difference between this jersey and the others, of course, is that it is not tied to a title series.

Now that there’s a new record for sports memorabilia, the question is, what could possibly top the Ruth jersey sale? And what could be the first women’s sports jersey to surpass the $1 million mark? The athlete asked three industry experts for their opinion.

Goldin, Founder and CEO of Goldin Auctions: “There are several trading cards that would surpass the price of this Babe Ruth jersey today, including a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 10 – Mantle’s first Topps card in the highest grade – and the famous T206 Honus Wagner in a PSA 8. Both cards were featured on Season 2 of King of Collectibles on Netflix, and I had an offer of $28 million turned down for the Mantle card alone.

“As far as game jerseys go, I believe the actual jersey worn by Jackie Robinson on April 15, 1947, in his major league debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers, would far surpass the Ruth jersey if it ever surfaced. Robinson’s jersey is the most important jersey ever worn in American sports history because on that day he broke the racial divide in baseball.

“A more modern example is Michael Jordan’s Game 6 jersey of the 1998 NBA Finals, which was taken from his final championship game. As time passes since Jordan’s career-defining moments, more records are broken for his memorabilia. We recently auctioned a signed Michael Jordan Logoman card from the 2003-2004 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection at Goldin for $2.928 million – a new record for a Jordan trading card.”

Grey Flannel Auctions employees: “It’s hard to say for sure if anything else can fetch that kind of price, but the market never ceases to surprise. The Ruth sale shows we’re moving toward art and wine pricing. If anyone could do it, it’s MJ. Specifically, his player from Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals would be a real stunner. In 2009, we probably sold Jordan’s first Bulls game jersey, which would fetch a high price today. The hobby really loves bookends.”

Calleja, Altan Insights: “It’s about the moment. There are great debut jerseys that would sell for millions if they ever went up for auction, like Jackie Robinson’s MLB debut jersey with the Dodgers, but the debut market has never been comparable to the market for memorabilia tied to an iconic moment.

“The jerseys that come to mind are Michael Jordan’s (from) Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals, when he scored a game-winning goal against the Utah Jazz, or the one he wore in Game 5 of the 1991 title for his first championship. There is nothing in the NFL or NHL market that could compete with Ruth’s jersey any time soon, and the soccer market has peaked, at least for the moment, after the sales of the Hand of God and Messi World Cup jerseys.

“The jersey that Wilt Chamberlain wore in his 100-point game has a similar aura and mystique to the Ruth jersey, but is safely in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. The most expensive piece of non-game-worn memorabilia may be the Scotty Cameron Red Dot putter that Tiger Woods used throughout his illustrious career. We’ve seen Red Dot putters and irons used by Tiger sell for millions, and the Scotty Cameron Red Dot that Tiger used to win 13 majors would easily fetch eight figures, although it’s unlikely to ever appear at public auction any time soon.”

Goldin: “That’s got to be Caitlin Clark, right? She broke new ground as an athlete and raised the profile of an entire sport. The jersey from her record-breaking game in Iowa is easily worth $250,000. As she continues to break basketball records, there’s no limit to the value of her merchandise.”

Grey flannel: “Again, it’s hard to say for sure, as prices unfortunately haven’t reached that threshold yet. Hypothetically, if Caitlin Clark does something crazy in a huge ad, it would be interesting to see what the market would say. Honorable mention: Brandi Chastain’s worn jersey from the 1999 World Cup.”

Street: “The market for women’s playing kit is unfortunately almost non-existent at the top end. There have been notable results in used playing kit over the years, for example Bonham’s sold the bat that Billie Jean King wore in the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ match for $125,000, but there has been nothing notable in the jerseys.

“I think it would have to have something to do with Serena Williams. She has earned a place among the greatest athletes of all time and has had several iconic moments. The first that comes to mind is the yellow Puma tank top she wore in the 1999 US Open final to win her first Grand Slam. The other is the black Puma tank top she wore to beat Venus at the 2002 US Open. The win came at a time when the sisters were both playing incredible tennis and America was dominating women’s tennis. There were rumors of other items – such as Brandi Chastain’s sports bra, which appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated and Newsweek after the 1999 Women’s World Cup – but to date there is no substance in the women’s soccer market that would justify a sale valued anywhere near a million dollars.”
