Witness describes efforts to rescue driver in fatal head-on collision in Lake Point

Sea Point, Tooele County – A woman is dead and a man is in critical condition after a head-on collision Tuesday near Interstate 80.

Cpl. Luis Silva of the Utah Highway Patrol said the woman who was killed was driving an eastbound SUV onto the ramp to westbound I-80 and crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a pickup truck. The woman died from her injuries in the collision.

The truck driver was flown to a hospital in critical condition, Silva said.

A passerby told KSL TV that there wasn’t much time to get the man out before the cab and engine burst into flames. He heard the impact and saw car parts flying through the air, so he got out of his own vehicle to check on everyone involved.

The passerby said he saw that the truck driver was seriously injured and the truck was on fire. He said he flagged down a dump truck driver and asked him for a fire extinguisher. He then kept the flames under control while another man helped get the driver out. Soon after, the truck’s engine and cab were on fire.

UHP officials said their intervention and a seatbelt likely saved the driver’s life.

“Due to the damage to the vehicle and the manner in which the impact with the car occurred, he certainly would have died if he had not been wearing a seat belt,” said UHP Cpl. Sterling Saiz.

Officials reported that there was no immediate indication as to why the SUV driver crossed into oncoming traffic. However, they had an additional warning for drivers: Please do not use emergency turnaround zones to avoid traffic jams.

They said someone did this further down the road during this accident, which caused another accident and only made the situation worse.
