Scarlett Johansson’s polarizing and confusing science fiction film, Lucyis a Netflix hit 10 years later. Written and directed by Luc Beeson (Léon – The Professional, The Fifth Element), the 2014 science fiction film is about a woman who, after a powerful drug accidentally enters her bloodstream, develops superhuman powers such as telekinesis and telepathy and seeks revenge on her former kidnappers. In addition to Johansson in the lead role, the cast also includes Morgan Freeman, Choi Min-sik, Amr Waked, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Pilou Asbæk and Lio Tipton.

Today, a decade after its initial release in 2014, Johansson’s polarizing and outrageous sci-fi film is a hit on Netflix. Lucy ranked eighth in Netflix’s Global Top 10 charts with 4.4 million views in the week of August 19-25 and 6.5 million hours watched. How was Lucy received?

It received generally positive but polarizing reviews

Lucy received mostly positive reviews from criticswho praised the energetic and playful tone, over-the-top tension, and Johannsson’s charisma overcoming the film’s logical inconsistencies, resulting in a fairly strong Rotten Tomatoes score of 67%. Although Lucy’s reviews were mostly positive, they were also quite polarized. While the themes, visual effects, and Johannsson’s performance were the subject of some praise, many criticized the film’s plot as illogical, particularly its perpetuation of the myth that humans only use 10% of their brains.

The science fiction film polarized the audienceas its 47% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes shows, was recently renamed Popcornmeter. Shortly thereafter, however, Beeson clarified that he was not actually working on a sequel to LucyInstead, a spin-off series is said to be in the works in 2022, with Freeman in talks to reprise his role as Professor Samuel Norman. All sequels to Lucy have yet to come to fruition, perhaps the film’s recent success on Netflix could provide the much-needed impetus.
