It may not be as big as Black Friday or Prime Day, but Labor Day weekend is still one of the best times to shop every year. Whether you’re looking for back-to-school laptop discounts or just want to save some money on everyday essentials, Labor Day sales are a great opportunity to do so.
Although Labor Day isn’t until September 2nd this year, there are already some sales worth shopping around for. Most importantly, you can already browse the Amazon Labor Day sale and find some of the best deals around. Labor Day weekend is still a few days away, and not every retailer has started their sale yet. Best Buy, for example, has a landing page announcing a major Labor Day sale, but it doesn’t start until Friday, August 30th.
What should you buy during the Labor Day sales?
Years of experience have taught us that some product categories are more likely to have good Labor Day discounts than others. Our recommendations for what to buy during Labor Day sales are based on a mix of historical prices and current deals.
Furniture
Labor Day traditionally brings the best furniture prices of the entire year. You should be able to find deals on popular standing desks, gaming chairs, and more. Retailers also offer deep discounts on outdoor furniture as the summer season comes to an end.
Laptops, PCs and tablets
Back-to-school season is generally an excellent time to buy a laptop or a new PC. Because of this, it’s also a great time to buy PC accessories. Manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo, and HP all have special deals right now that you can take advantage of right now. Aside from these brands, Labor Day also proves to be a really good time to buy an iPad and various Android tablets.
Monitors and TVs
If you’re looking to buy a new screen for your console, PC, or laptop, now is one of the best times of the year to buy a gaming monitor. Thanks to many special offers from the same manufacturers for laptops and PCs, you can also find some of the most popular gaming monitors at lower prices. Additionally, Labor Day weekend is usually a pretty good time to find deals on a new TV.
Large appliances and grills
Although Black Friday is generally the best time to buy most things, major appliances are one of the few things you’ll find better deals on over Labor Day weekend. Retailers like Home Depot, Lowe’s, LG, and Best Buy have all already started their appliance sales, and you can save on refrigerators, washing machines, grills, and more.
Mattresses
Holiday weekends are always a great time to buy a mattress. Every major online mattress retailer has some sort of promotion they run every time there’s a three-day weekend, and Labor Day is no different. You can usually find a decent mattress for really little money if you don’t mind buying from a bed-in-a-box brand like Casper.
Clothing
With fall just around the corner and shopping for the new school year at its peak, Labor Day weekend is one of the best times of the year to snag clothes. Major retailers like Old Navy and Macy’s are already running sales, and many smaller brands will be offering some sort of Labor Day promotion this weekend as well.
Outdoor equipment
Much like clothing stores, outdoor stores often offer pretty deep discounts as the seasons change. Labor Day marks the transition between summer and fall, which means you can usually find great deals on camping gear and other warm-weather gear. REI is perhaps the most notable place to shop, and its Labor Day sale is already live.
Books
Labor Day weekend is a surprisingly good time to find some good deals on books. This is largely thanks to the huge Barnes and Noble sale that happens every year, but Amazon is also currently offering some worthwhile deals on hardcovers. This year there are even Kindle deals, making it a good time to pick up an e-reader if you don’t already have one.
LEGO Sets
While Labor Day sales aren’t traditionally the best time to buy LEGO sets, this year there are some surprisingly good deals we weren’t expecting. Barnes and Noble offers LEGO deals in its sales and Amazon has some well-hidden price drops. If you’re looking for a discount on a LEGO Disney set or a deal on LEGO flowers, now is a great time to buy.
What should you not buy during the Labor Day sales?
The short answer is that you shouldn’t buy anything that isn’t on sale. The longer answer is that there are some product categories where good deals just aren’t available, no matter how hard you look. Labor Day, for example, isn’t a particularly good time to buy video games, and you probably won’t find discounts on the major consoles either. You should also consider holding off on buying a new phone if you’re planning on buying one, as new models will be coming out soon and prices will continue to drop on Black Friday. With the iPhone 16 coming out in September, the best time to buy a new iPhone is still a long way off.
Other upcoming sales events
If you don’t plan on shopping on Labor Day, there are still a few sales coming up in 2024. Next up is Amazon’s Prime Day event in October, which the company just recently confirmed will be happening again this year. This sale takes place sometime in mid-October and is a precursor to Black Friday. After that, Black Friday deals usually start as early as late October and run through Cyber Monday.
