Morgantown doctor pleads guilty to tax fraud

A Morgantown doctor pleaded guilty to tax fraud on Monday, admitting that he underreported his taxable income on his tax return.

According to U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld, 63-year-old David M. Anderson of Morgantown caused $143,599 in damages to the IRS.

According to court records, Anderson was charged with four counts of filing false tax returns from 2017 to 2020. However, he entered into a plea agreement in which he pleaded guilty to only four counts. Count four states that he willfully filed a false 1040 tax return for the 2020 tax year.

The indictment states that Anderson reported taxable income of $20,282 and total taxes of $9,298, even though he knew his taxable income was higher than the reported amount and he should have paid more total taxes.

The settlement calls for tax losses between $100,000 and $250,000 between 2017 and 2020. Anderson agreed to pay the IRS $143,599.

“The Department of Justice works every day to ensure that those who fail to pay their income taxes are held accountable,” said U.S. Attorney Ihlenfeld. “Dr. Anderson has fallen far short of his obligation and must now pay, plus penalties and interest, and faces a lengthy prison sentence.”

A federal judge will determine Anderson’s sentence at a later date, taking into account U.S. sentencing guidelines.

The maximum sentence Anderson faces is a term of imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to $100,000 and one year of probation.
