Storms leave power outages and tree damage in the city

During the night, violent storms swept through the Twin Cities, bringing strong winds and causing isolated power outages in Eden Prairie. Emergency crews worked throughout the night to clear debris from the streets and assess potential dangers to the public.

“City workers worked through the night to clear storm debris from the streets and limit other damage that could harm the public. Today they are continuing cleanup and damage assessment,” said Joyce Lorenz, Eden Prairie communications manager, Tuesday.

Residents can report blocked roads or downed power lines by calling the police non-emergency number at 952-949-6200.

Social media posts from residents noted strong winds and some storm damage, as well as reports of downed trees and branches in various parts of Eden Prairie.

Several areas in the city are still without power Tuesday afternoon. Efforts to restore power are ongoing, and residents can view the latest updates on Xcel Energy and Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative outage maps.

The Eden Prairie Community Center is open and is receiving power from a backup generator. To keep the ice rinks and pools operating, air conditioning has been shut off in the main areas of the building, including the fitness center and locker rooms. These areas of the building will remain warm and humid until power is restored. Please visit the City’s website for current facility information.

To assist with storm cleanup efforts, the city’s yard waste dump at 9811 Flying Cloud Drive will be open Wednesday, August 28, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The site is available to Eden Prairie residents and business owners at no charge. Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill, is required for access. Landlords or business owners should bring a utility bill or business card with an Eden Prairie address. Commercial haulers and landscapers are not permitted to use the site, regardless of the source of the material or the location of the business.

Regular opening hours, usage instructions and a list of accepted materials for the garden waste disposal site can be found on the city’s website.
